GPN NIGHT WALK - EMBANKMENT/WESTMINSTER

The GPN Night Walk took place on Friday 23^rd September along London’s Embankment led by Stephen McKenna.

The objectives for the night included an introduction to mastering photography in low light conditions and using slow shutter speeds to create motion blur and capture light trails. There was also an emphasis on different compositional approaches including landscape, abstract and enhanced creativity (eg. Jerk panning/overexposure etc.).

Twenty-two members attended the walk, many of them new to the group and with a broad range of skills, but there was no shortage of enthusiasm and skills sharing.

Based on issues and questions which arose during the course of the evening this photoblog provides a user's guide with a particular emphasis on helping members get to grips with the manual features of their cameras.

CAMERA SETTINGS – SHOOTING ON MANUAL

‘My camera’s very expensive and fully automatic: why would I bother with the manual settings?”

Automatic controls on today’s cameras are very handy, but sometimes, especially in challenging environments such as low light/darkness, they’ll only make the best of a bad job. Taking manual control of the camera will allow you to achieve more refined results and avoid some of the compression that your camera applies automatically. So, coming up, thumbnail guides to the ISO, aperture priority and shutter speed:

ISO: “What’s an ISO and will Jessops have one?”

Your ISO setting indicates the sensitivity at which an image is recorded on your camera’s sensor. Based on the scale originally applied for film stock you could think it of it being like a measure for different grains of sand paper. ISO 100 represents the finest, cleanest setting then raises in turns of coarseness through 200, 400, 800 on up to 1600 and beyond.

Ideally 100 is best, especially for classic, postcard landscapes, but higher ISO settings will allow you to shoot with lower light levels and there will be occasions and settings for which some noise (grain) in the shot will add to its atmosphere. Imagine a shot of a dingy, rainy London street for example.

Westminster Twilight

APERTURE: “My dial has something called ‘AP’ on it. What’s that?’

AP stands for Aperture Priority and this setting gives you control over the size of your hole! The aperture determines the amount of light you are allowing to enter the camera. Depending on the lens you’re using the aperture settings could typically range from f1.8 up to f22. Somewhat confusingly, the smaller the f number, the bigger the hole - the bigger the number, the smaller the whole.

“So, in dark conditions, I should use a smaller aperture setting to let in the most light?”

Not necessarily. You’ve a second way by which to control that – the length of the exposure which we’ll come on to shortly. Also, the aperture setting will also have an affect on the focal range you’ll achieve, usually referred to as the ‘depth of field’ or DOF.

Shooting at a high f value such as f22 will provide a greater depth of field. That is, providing an equal sharpness for objects close and far, such as you might want for a boat on a lake with range of mountains in the background, or maybe on a cityscape shot. At the other end of the scale, around the f2s, you’ll get a very narrow depth of field. Imagine a classy portrait shot, sharpest on the eyes, soft on the hair and the background all of a blur, or perhaps a close-up on the taxi sign on a black cab with a blur of nightlights in the background.

SHUTTER SPEED: “I’m nervous about shutter speeds. We’ve only got curtains in our house!”

Your camera works on the basis of allowing light to fall on a sensor for a set period of time. This is achieved by means of a shutter covering the aperture which can be momentarily released. In very bright conditions this could typically be for just a thousandth of a second, however for night shooting, or indoor work, that interval becomes much longer and can be a second to, say, fifteen seconds, or even longer.

The duration that’s required to take a sufficiently exposed shot is determined by the aperture you’ve selected and your in-camera metering should indicate the required speed of release.

“What a waste of time. My shots were either too dark or over exposed. Sod this for a game of soldiers. I’m goin’ darn the pub!”

Well, while you’re in the pub look back at your pictures in display mode and you’ll be able to see the settings that you chose for each shot. That shot that’s too dark – note the exposure time, same with the over-exposed shot and give some thought to how you might have adjusted those settings to get a better result .

Remember, that each location and setting will create its own demands and with repeated experimentation you’ll become familiar with the requirements of a night shoot. It won’t be simple at first, but stick with it.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

"My camera’s fcuked! The auto-focus isn't working!!”

Sometimes in low light conditions the auto-focus is unable to ‘see’ what you are trying to focus on. One solution is to find a point in the picture at a similar distance that it can find, let it focus on that, and then recompose your shot accordingly. Alternatively, just focus manually. Not always easy in the dark so you may want to try a test shot, then enlarge it and see if you’re on the mark.

"What are these coloured spots on my pictures?"

The problem here is lens flare. Despite the low light conditions of night shooting it is possible that you will experience some degree of flare from time to time. A tulip head or lens hood will minimise that possibility, but it still may be an issue from time to time and a dark background will make such spots more conspicuous. It may be that you will have to resort to eliminating by retouching.

"I've put my camera on Ebay. All my nightshots are blurred. Grrrr!"

Handheld photography at night is achieveable (sometimes!), but there are situations which, unavoidably, will require the kind of exposure time that'll defeat even the steadiest of hands. So, take the camera off Ebay and check out what offers they have on tripods. It needn't cost you much at all and will really make the difference to your night shots.

SOME OTHER THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND

THE RIGHT KIT – “What kind of kit is best for night shoots?”

Wide-angle lens – best for broad panorama, soaring edifices etc.

Shutter release cable – much handier than a camera’s timer and essential in avoiding camera shake.

Tripod / mini-tripod – not compulsorary but strongly recommended for the best results.

Small torch – it’s dark out there! Really, useful if you’re rummaging in the old bag for stuff.

Apropriate clothing – you might be out for a couple of hours, standing around, so you’ll get cold easily. Also a reflector belt or hi-vis clothing is a good idea.

BE SAFETY CONSCIOUS

It's still dark out there, so, always pay attention to your surroundings. Watch your footing and check for any unseen hazards (that's where the torch comes in). It's also easy to switch off and become absorbed in your picture taking, so if you're shooting near a busy road, or sat on a traffic island, or such, be switched on to potential hazards around you and be sure you're visible (hence the hi-vis jacket).

Bear in mind, also, your personal security. Be aware of passers-by and always keep your kit close by, preferably in front of you rather than behind you.

CONCLUSION

Nightime shooting can be a very rewarding experience. There’s something special about going out after dark when there are fewer people about and fewer visual distractions; and with the magical quality of the city lights at night you’ll be able to capture some very special shots. So, wrap up warm and stick at it.

"Westminster Dusk" (above): This twilight shot is helped by a moody presence of cloud hanging over Westminster while some subtle burning (darkening) has accented the sense of drama. The sky hue has been achieved using the 'split toning' facility in Lightroom with magenta assigned the highlights and some blue to the shadows.

"Waterloo Trails" (below) : The secret to good motion blur and traffic trail shots is in the timing. Your exposure does not have to be very long, but the important things is to get good action in the shot. In the image below I was sat on a traffic island at the end of Waterloo Bridge and my target was to get a bus cornering the roundabout. There was no shortage of them but the challenge was in firing the camera just ahead of the bus coming into shot. Sometimes though a bus passed either too close or too far. Eventually, on about the fifth shot I captured what I was after. A tripod was essential in capturing this image with a remote switch to avoid any camera shake. Settings were: ISO 100 - Ap f22 - Exp: 6".

"Peninsular Gasholder" (below): Choice Shooting Times - Twilight is a great time for night shots when there is still some light in the sky. Complete darkness is never very photogenic and this shot would not have had nearly as much presenence without the waning twilight sky behind it; and even better with some lingering clouds to add interest. Settings: ISO 100 - Ap f22 - Exp: 0.8 secs.

Mood Enhancers: By mood enhancers I mean those elements which add atmosphere to a shot such as a river reflection, the rain that makes a nighttime cobbled street glisten and the fluoresence of urban street lighting as can be seen in the following images.

NIGHT WALK - THE RESULTS

Following the GPN Night Walk on London's Embankment we're pleased to present a selection of images from the event. Our chosen photographers have also taken the time to provide a brief commentary on the hows-and-whys of capturing their night shots.

With additional comments from event leader, Stephen McKenna.

EDDIE CHUI: "Apart from a few attempts on a holiday in Paris, this was my first attempt at night photography. Achieving the bus stream / Big Ben shot was such fun. Set up in the middle of the road traffic island the camera pointed at Big Ben from a tripod it was ok ok bus is coming. Here we go SNAP. Damn missed it. Try again. OK ok bus is coming - oh well that time I caught the tail end. This needs team work. I'll look through the camera and you tell me when bus is coming ok. Bus is coming , yes it is, almost there. Bored waiting look up - bus flies past - damn missed the bus again. Eventually the timing and team work happened hence the pic you now see and what fun."

SMcK: The success of this shot is in the timing and the composition, both of which are spot on. The motion blur of the bus nicely dominates the left side of the shot but fades most politely to allow the full length of the Palace of Westminster clock tower to come through and fill the right of the image.

NICOLAS CHINARDET: "As is often the case for interesting pictures, there is an element of serendipity here. What attracted me to the shot was the drawing and how it was standing out as if in a spotlight. But when I started to compose my shot I realised I had to try and include the shadowy figure of the photographer and those of the group of "artists" in the top right corner. Each "group" answering to the other. Their presence gives a little more meaning to what would otherwise have been just a picture of a drawing on a pavement.

When I got home I cropped the pic to focus it a bit more on the circle of light. I think it was portrait with bits of the millenium footpath and too much pavement. Ideally I would have liked to have everything in a neat square but that wasn't possible.

Oddly this is probably the picture I took on the night that got the biggest response. Personally, I find it intriguing but it's not my favorite of that shoot and if i am honest I am not sure I see why people like it so much. I don't think the composition quite works.

I have a Canon 450D and it seems I was shooting in Manual."

SMcK: Despite Nicolas's misgivings I think the composition for this shot couldn't be bettered. There's an excellent sense of balance to it (or as Nicolas puts it more eloquently, 'each group 'answering' to the other'), a choreography almost. It has a narrative also, a sense of moment, which is very intriguing.

LAWRENCE LANG: "Changing the focal length (or ‘zooming’) during long exposures can create interesting effects. This works particularly well for night scenes where there are multiple light sources.

The photo ‘Light Zoom’ was a manual, 10 second exposure with a 6.3 aperture value, ISO at 100 and supported by a monopod. The shot was created in the following way:

- set your focus, release the shutter and wait for 2 seconds, then

- zoom in a little & pause for a second, then repeat until the exposure ends (zoom in & pause; zoom in & pause; zoom in & pause).

In this example the focal length was changed from 105mm (telephoto) to 24mm (wide angle). Keep in mind that by reversing the zoom you’ll create a completely different result.

The number of increments and the amount of zoom can vary depending on the effect you want to achieve. It’s best to experiment. You’ll be surprised at the outcome!

You can also try:

- changing the focus as you zoom (this will create a dramatic bokeh effect where lights go from bulbs to bubbles of light)

- start with a mid-point focal length, then zoom forward and back (eg: start at 35mm, zoom forward to 24mm, and then back to 105mm)

- start the zoom before you release the shutter and pause for the last couple of seconds

- capturing moving lights with a long zoom exposure

- move the camera left/right/up/down when zooming or during the pause moment."

SMcK: Little wonder that Lawrence's very exciting shot was chosen as GPN's Photo of the Month. It has a marvellous vibrancy and fizzes with a real sci-fi ambience, and what a novel technique - focus-pulling on an extended exposure. I bet we wish we'd all thought of that one!

ANDREW EASTWOOD: "I hadn't photographed 'Ben' at night for over twenty years, when I first moved to London, so he was a lot younger then (not unlike myself). As one of the most iconic sights he's a must for photographers to capture. While walking to Westminster Bridge to photograph the whole of Ben I 'clocked' the illuminated Westminster tube entrance sign and there poking up erect behind it was Ben's head (well face), He looked stunning and the combination of the two of them almost rubbing shoulders was unmissable."

SMcK: Excellent 'London' shot which would work well as a postcard. Nice and sharp for a handheld capture also. You can almost hear Ben's big dong in this shot, so to speak.

LEIGH CARTER: "The inspiration for this underpass shot came to me while looking around for something different to shot during the night walk. My camera was supported on a wall using a bean cushion and was originally a landscape image due to not having a tripod available. The first couple of shots were taken at 10 then 20 second delays but there were not enough people walking through to create a good effect. The third shot (this one) had a 30 second delay and worked perfectly. It was taken in manual with an aperture of F/22."

SMcK: Tourists in London are so prevalent that they tend to disappear from our view (apart from when they're blocking the pavement in front of us. Grrr.) and this evocative use of motion blur neatly encapsulates that relationship. The tunnel location also provides a striking setting.

GEOFF TITLEY: "London Eye, the London icon of the new millennium. It is big, and it is bold. I think this image emphasises that boldness of the construction and the simplicity of the original idea – a wheel. From many vantage points in the city, the wheel is only partly visible above the roofs of buildings. This image refers to the other half of the wheel; the part of the wheel that is only visible when you are in its proximity."

SMcK: "This is a very enjoyable abstract. Full of colour and with a very apt, watery shimmer. We could almost be looking at a distorted reflection in the river."
